Record numbers at Crossrail talk

John Goldsmith, Crossrail Community Relations Manager, drew over 120 people when he spoke at a Society event on 29 May. He brought us up to date regarding progress with the Elizabeth Line infrastructure, trains and service. Although there was wry laughter when a picture of the delayed Ealing Broadway station was shown, the full service is still scheduled for completion by December 2019. The new rolling stock is already coming out to Ealing. The trains are light, cheaper to run and have a capacity of 1500 seated and standing passengers. He talked about the 5 Crossrail stations in the Borough, and the major engineering projects in the area: the Acton Dive Under and the Stockley flyover. Planned frequency of trains to Heathrow has already been increased. After his talk, John fielded a large number of questions ranging from escalators and lifts to bicycles, to the use of freedom passes, to the “temporary” Crossrail building on Haven Green. But predictably the first question concerned the delayed opening of Ealing Broadway station. Building work should start this summer we were told, with the opening date scheduled for December 2019.
