Historic Southall

Southall ManorWe celebrated Civic Day this year by visiting Southall to see Southall Manor and Gardens and the wonderful Martinware collection at the Dominion Centre. Over 30 people were given a fascinating tour of the old manor house by Gavin Leonard, the Borough Architect, who was involved in the recent conservation repair of the building. This included a visit to the attic to see the oak beams which were all harvested from the same stand of trees. Gavin has let us have the notes and appendices he used for his talk and tour. You can download the history by clicking here and the appendices with pictures and plans here. Jan Anderson, Landscape Architect, then took us round the gardens and talked about the history and recent restoration work which led to an Ealing Civic Society Award in 2012. Finally, Jonathan Oates, Archivist and Local History Librarian, led us across the road to see the beautiful Martinware pottery collection in the Dominion Centre library.
